In 1877 the first ship to sail with a cooled cargo, the Frigorifique sailed from Buenos Aires, Argentina to the port of Rouen in France. This was a historical voyage, because this was the first ship to sail across an ocean with cooled cargo. It was not a success however. When the ship anchored at the port in France, all of the cargo had spoiled. On the Frigorifique, refrigeration was maintained by water that was cooled down by ice then pumped around the ship in pipes. The pump, however, broke on the voyage, which caused the meat to spoil.
